A massive off season rebuild of Damien Croston’s Gemini Sports Sedan paid dividends at the opening round of the 2009 Queensland State Championships recently at Morgan Park Raceway, with an under two-litre class win and fourth outright for the weekend.
The DCR Fabrications & Motorsport team had a busy off season, repairing the car after it was extensively damaged at Queensland Raceway late in 2008, along the way rebuilding the engine to run on E85 fuel, a similar ethanol blend that is being used by V8 Supercars this season.
Croston was very pleased with the improvements to the car, and is looking forward to a big season ahead.
“We rebuilt the engine in the off-season to run on the new PowerPlus E85+, and we couldn’t be happier with the results,” said Croston.
“Running on E85, we found an extra six horsepower at the wheels and the engine runs cooler, we are now looking at running a few more state level cars on it.
“The opening round of the championship was very strong for us, we made a few set up changes through the weekend and managed to get down to a 1:07sec lap time in the races, despite running on three meeting old tyres.
“With new tyres on the car for round two, we plan to get down into the 1:06 bracket, with the ultimate goal being to set a new lap record for the under two-litre Sports Sedan class, and finish top three in the State Championship.
“I would really like to thank John Stocks for building the engine, as well as looking after the data logging and car set up, Paul Young, Colin Carter and Ian Wright for their help.”
The team plan to compete in the full State Championship series at Morgan Park Raceway, as well as take in a round of the Queensland Racing Drivers Championship at Lakeside Park.
The next round of the State Championship will be held on April 25-26, with the meeting being promoted by the Queensland Racing Drivers Association, which will ensure a well subscribed and competitive Sports Sedan field.
The meeting will feature Saturday night racing, with the non-headlight classes such as Sports Sedans expected to have twilight races into the setting sun.
Damien Croston would like to thank the ongoing support of his sponsors, especially PowerPlus Fuels, Pine Rivers Bearings, Leda Suspension, Chip Torque, Damien Emery Engineering, Trump Card Race Products, Northside Engine Balancing and HPC Queensland.
