THE WILSON BROTHERS RACING Subaru WRX Sti driven by Lee Castle is right in title contention coming into the final round of the Australian Manufacturers Championship, after a strong weekend on the podium at Oran Park Raceway.
After winning the opening race in a forceful display, the two Sunday races netted the team second and third place results, vaulting Castle into first in the John Bowe Driver's Award and Class A1 pointscore, and second in the Australian Manufacturers Championship behind BMW driver Garry Holt.
Castle made a blinding start in race number two for the weekend from grid position six to quickly settle into second position behind the Mitsubishi Evo 10 of Steve Glenney, as the pair raced hard to the finish.
The third and final race featured a handicap start, with the Subaru WRX Sti making short work of the competition, charging through the field to be placed in third at the chequered flag.
Castle’s progress was somewhat hindered in the finale by a lack of usable tyres, after damaging two of the team’s allotment of six Dunlops en-route to victory in the opening race.
The first, second and third outright places for the weekend put Castle equal third on the weekend’s point score alongside fellow Queenslander Jake Camilleri.
“That wasn’t a bad weekend at all, it has done wonders for our championship chances,” said Castle.
“If we had some better tyres left for the last race I’m sure we could have been able to challenge Steve Glenney for the win, but regardless, it was a top effort by the team to be on the podium all weekend long.
“I’m really looking forward to Sandown, we won the round and the John Bowe Drivers Award there last year, so we know what it takes to get the job done.”
Team principal of Wilson Brothers Racing Cameron Wilson was excited to end the team’s last visit to Oran Park on a high note.
“I’m extremely proud of the team, it was a very good result and we are happy to prove that the old Subaru still has plenty of pace left in it,” said Wilson.
“We’re stoked with Lee’s performance, he was on a charge this weekend, and if he can keep up that sort of form, look out Sandown!
“The team is certainly going to miss Oran Park, we’ve had a fair bit of success here over the years and it’s one of our favourite circuits.”
The championship concludes at Melbourne’s Sandown Park on November 28/29, while the weekend’s racing will be telecast on SBS Speedweek this Sunday from 1pm, check your local listings for broadcast details.
