Motor Racing Championships Under Lights

Morgan Park Raceway, Warwick
April 25-26 2009

Night racing returns to the Queensland Motor Racing State Championships on Anzac Day at Morgan Park Raceway, with ten classes set to tear up the track.

Night racing on the full circuit at Morgan Park Raceway has been trialed twice before, once in 2006 and again late last year, with the success of those events spurring on the promoting club, the Queensland Racing Drivers Association (QRDA) to hold their annual championship meeting under lights.

QRDA club president Chris Donnelly is excited by the prospect of racing under lights.

“The QRDA have been hosting championship race meetings at Morgan Park Raceway since 2003, and we always find that the people of the Darling Downs really love their motorsport,” said Mr Donnelly.

“The opportunity has been given to us by Bill Campbell and the Warwick District Sporting Car Club to run this event under lights, and I think anyone who has ever raced at Morgan Park at night can attest to the brilliant spectacle.

“There is nothing better than watching racing at night- sparks flying and brakes glowing, race cars run better at night, and it brings into play another side to the driver’s skill set.

“At this stage we are really hopeful of a big entry for the meeting, with several classes suggesting that they have many more competitors on board than at recent events.”

Being Anzac Day, the local Warwick branch of the RSL will assist competitors with a lunchtime Anzac Service, which will be held prior to qualifying.

Following on from qualifying, there will be twilight racing for classes such as Sports Sedans, which are not equipped with headlights.

However for other sedan based classes such as HQ Holdens, Queensland Geminis, Saloon Cars, Improved Production and Historic Touring Cars, night racing will kick in, with scratch races going well into the night.

Other classes to also take to the track over the weekend include Sports Cars, Formula Ford, Formula Vee and Superkarts.

Morgan Park Raceway has a long association with night racing, with many races being held over the years on the floodlit short circuits.

Racing on the long circuit at night is possible by utilising the permanent lighting system, as well as temporary lighting on the long circuit corners and flag points.
