All is in readiness for championship motor racing under lights on Anzac Day at Morgan Park Raceway in Warwick, with a quality field entered for the Queensland Motor Racing Championships.
In a first for the Queensland Championships, Anzac Day will see point scoring races under lights, before the full 36 race program is completed on Sunday.
Ten different classes will take to the challenging 2.1km Morgan Park Raceway layout, including tin top favourites in the form of Sports Sedans, Historic Touring Cars, HQ Holdens, Geminis, Saloon Cars and Improved Production Cars, as well as open wheelers including Formula Ford and Formula Vee, and the pocket rocket Superkarts.
Chris Donnelly, president of the organising club the Queensland Racing Drivers Association (QRDA), is looking forward to a big weekend of racing.
“Despite the tough economic times, it’s fantastic that so many competitors are coming out to race this weekend, and we hope that everyone will enjoy the spectacle of Saturday night racing,” said Mr Donnelly.
“All of the classes racing are well subscribed, and there are some very exciting entries across the board.
“Racing under lights in the points scoring races will be a sight to see, over the years the lighting system at Morgan Park Raceway has been perfected, and the end of April should provide perfect weather for the meeting.
Mr Donnelly himself will take to the track in his big V8 Falcon Sports Sedan, one of several state champions in the field including Bob McLoughlin (V8 Commodore), Colin Smith (V8 Rover) and Shane Bradford (Rotary Mazda).
The quality field of 17 Sports Sedans also includes national level campaigner Phil Crompton in his fire breathing Trans Am Mustang, with the lap record set to tumble in the Saturday afternoon twilight races.
Historic Touring Cars will once again provide the biggest field for the meeting, with cars from at least seven different marques taking to the circuit, with the pair of night races being must see events.
Local hopes are high, with Warwick competitor Jamie Furness set to continue the battle for HQ Holden supremacy, after a thrilling clash last time out with 2008 champion Dion Cidoni.
Hopes of a female win are high in the Gemini class, with Melissa Thompson, Tracey Whale and Rebecca Dawes all putting in strong showings this season, while the entertaining Improved Production class make their Morgan Park Raceway debut for 2009.
The Ford versus Holden battle in Saloon Cars continues with a strong field, while the open wheel battles in Racing Cars and Formula Vees also have expanded entries.
Capping off the action, the outright Sports Cars with specialist prototype machines have a strong field to take on some very quick Porsche machinery, while Morgan Park favourites, the Superkarts, have a very strong entry in the outright 250cc class.
Qualifying and racing this Saturday will commence at around 1:30pm after the Warwick branch of the RSL host an Anzac Day service on the main straight at 1:00pm, with everyone invited to attend.
