Wilson Brothers Racing and Lee Castle have had a solid day of practice in preparation for the final round the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Victoria’s Sandown Raceway today.
A good run in this weekend’s two races aboard the team’s Subaru WRX Sti will consolidate not only Castle’s championship lead in the Class A title chase, but will also wrap up the prestigious John Bowe Drivers Award, going to the best overall driver for the season.
Steady progress with car set up saw Castle set the second quickest lap time overall, with a best lap time of 1:24.0463sec around the demanding 3.1km layout.
Castle is looking forward to the challenge this weekend, especially with the largest field of the year, including several HSVs making their championship debut.
“It was a really good opening day, we were right on the pace of the Wall Mitsubishi Evo, but we’ve got our work cut out to catch the Miedecke/Hollings Evo,” said Castle.
“Today we were only using old practice tyres, so tomorrow with new tyres on for qualifying, we should see a good improvement in lap times.
“I’m really looking forward to the racing, and with the two championships on the line, it should make for some very interesting viewing.”
For team principal Cameron Wilson, the day proved the work which the Wilson Brothers Racing team have recently carried out on the car is paying dividends.
“We are very happy with the custom 90 litre fuel tank we have installed in the car in preparation for the Bathurst 12 Hour next February,” said Wilson.
“It has really helped with the balance of the car, and I am very impressed to be second quickest on the day against such stiff competition, especially since the engine is due for a rebuild before the 12 Hour after a tough year of racing.”
Racing over the weekend involves a pair of one hour long races, which include a compulsory pit stop for a two tyre change.
One wildcard over the weekend could prove to be the weather, however the team have already endured trying conditions on the trip to Sandown through rural Australia from their Gold Coast base.
Turquoise skies burst three times with several hail storms in Victoria, following on from a breakage of the team’s transporter outside of Goulburn.
However, the efforts of Vic from Goulburn Truck Towing, Andy from the Goulburn Police, and the team at Rapid Auto Repairs saw the team back on the road again.
