Outright victory and a pair of championship victories capped a brilliant day and season for Wilson Brothers Racing and Lee Castle at Sandown Raceway today.
By virtue of winning the fourth and final round of the Australian Manufacturers Championships outright, Castle driving the team’s Subaru WRX Sti also wrapped up the prestigious John Bowe Drivers Award and the Class A championship.
Castle led away strongly from the start of the race, heading the combined Class A and B cars in the opening exchanges.
An early race safety car bunched the field while Shaun Keogh’s crashed HSV was recovered, nullifying the advantage held by the smaller capacity cars off the handicap start.
Varying dramas then started to creep into the competition, with the David and Des Wall Misubishi Evo, the Andrew Miedecke/Charlie Hollings Evo and the Jake Camilleri Mazda 3 MPS all heading to the pits with mechanical gremlins.
With the cards falling right for Castle, all that was needed was a solid drive to the chequered flag to fend off the hard charging John Bowe, sharing Chris Delfsma’s Falcon.
After one hour of racing, the eventual margin of victory for Castle was five seconds.
“Once again it was a good race for the WBR Subaru, and it caps of a top year for the team,” said Castle.
“Being chased to the win by John Bowe was fantastic, and it’s also great that he has leant his name to the John Bowe Drivers Award, which is a tremendous honour to win.
“Benn Wilson and John Desmond once again did a spot on job in the pits, and our tyre change was right on the money.”
For team principal Cameron Wilson, the round and championship victories were a fitting reward for the team’s efforts.
“I’m stoked, very very happy for the team and Lee on the results from this weekend,” said Wilson.
“The Subaru has had brilliant reliability all championship long, and it’s a credit to the work put in back at our Gold Coast base.
“It’s really promising in the lead up to the Bathurst 12 Hour having won the past two rounds of the Manufactuers Championship, it was a great effort by the team, and Lee was on the money all year long.”
It will be a busy week for the Wilson Brothers Racing team, with the crew heading to Oran Park next week for the final round of the V8 Utes championship, preparing Kurt Wimmer’s VE Holden ute as well as assisting with Jack Elsegood’s BF Falcon ute.
