The Wilson Brothers Racing duo of Jack Elsegood and Kurt Wimmer set a cracking pace in the opening race of the Yokohama V8 Ute Championship at Oran Park this afternoon.
Elsegood, driving the Coopers Pale Ale BF Falcon Ute ripped around the circuit, setting a new lap record on his way to third position , while Wimmer will start the top-16 reverse grid race two from the front row after flying through the field to finish 15th.
Elsegood started in fifth position by virtue of the scratched qualifying session, but soon moved past championship leader Layton Crambrook, setting up an entertaining scrap with Kim Jane.
On the seventh of 12 laps, Elsegood finally was able to make the move stick for third, and had to drive hard to fend off the advances of a hard charging Ryal Harris towards the chequered flag.
For Wimmer, the race was a repeat of the opening battle at the previous round at Bathurst, with the un-sponsored VE Holden Ute coming through from 20th to finish 15th.
After picking off two cars on the first lap, Wimmer raced hard with Steve Hodges, Greg Willis and Craig Dontas to the finish, in an at times door handle to door handle contest.
Team principal Cameron Wilson was delighted with the team’s efforts in the opening encounter.
“Overall, a new lap record and a podium for Jack, as well as a front row start for Kurt in race two is all we could have asked for out of that race after the qualifying issues,” said Wilson.
“We knew Jack was going to be on the pace this weekend, and he always has a be go in the reverse grid races.
“Jack is getting in heaps of track time this weekend by also driving the GT Falcon in the Touring Car Masters, so that should put him in good stead.
“As for Kurt, starting on the front row at Bathurst, he was able to pick up a race win and there is no reason he can’t repeat that this weekend.”
The race was originally scheduled to start at lunch time, but a massive accident in the Formula Fords meant that the race was delayed some five hours to fit in with the V8 Supercar schedule.
The final two races of the weekend will be broadcast during the V8 Supercar coverage on Channel 7 this weekend.
