For the second meeting in succession, Kurt Wimmer has driven his Wilson Brothers Racing (WBR) prepared VE Holden Ute onto the top step of the podium at Oran Park, after dominating proceedings today.
Wimmer was the star of the show, starting from the front row, the un-sponsored ‘question mark’ car jumped instantly into the lead, resisting all challenges on the way to victory.
The icing on the cake for Wimmer was setting the fastest lap of the race, backing up the new lap record fellow WBR driver Jack Elsegood recorded in race number one.
A mid race safety car nullified Wimmer’s large early advantage, leaving a challenging run to the finish line with gun driver Kim Jane in hot persuit.
The final margin of victory was 0.2593sec.
Elsegood started the race from the outside of the seventh row of the grid by virtue of finishing third in the first race, prior to the inversion of the top 16 finishers for the race two start.
Being hung out to dry on the outside of the first series of corners made life difficult, with the Coopers Pale Ale BF Falcon Ute driving hard throughout the race to come home in tenth position.
Success in the race made it two race wins in a week for team principal Cameron Wilson, after taking out the Australian Manufacturers Championship round at Sandown with a Subaru six days ago.
“The race was a carbon copy of Bathurst, a fantastic effort by Kurt and the team to come home on top,” said Wilson.
“Even though the temperature of the day was quite high, the lap times hardly knocked off over the duration of the race, which shows that Kurt was driving well, and the team has put together a well set up car.
“Being a televised race, hopefully everyone out there will see just how well Kurt is driving, and those question marks on the car will be replaced by sponsor logos come season 2009.
“Obviously Jack had an unlucky run, but he drove well; he deserved a result better than 10th.
“Moving forward to the final race, both of the boys should be well on top of things, and starting towards the front of the field will be a big advantage.”
Elsegood will hit the track again today with the second race for the Biante Touring Car Masters aboard the GT Falcon.
The final V8 Ute race for the season is scheduled for tomorrow morning, being 12 laps in duration.
All of the action from races two and three will be shown during the V8 Supercar coverage on Channel 7 this weekend, while the Subaru victory from Sandown will be broadcast on SBS’s Speedweek program tomorrow afternoon.
