Kurt Wimmer won his second race for the weekend today at Oran Park in the V8 Ute Championship, wrapping up a brilliant season for the Wilson Brothers Racing team.

Starting from the outside of the second row of the grid after winning yesterday’s race, Wimmer once again made a stunning start in his un-sponsored VE Holden Ute to lead into the first corner, before running away with the race win.

Unlike the second race where a safety car interrupted proceedings, Wimmer’s early advantage never looked in doubt, as he cruised in the closing stages to a 2.5sec victory over eventual round winner Grant Johnson.

Wimmer once again set the fastest lap of the race, only fractions off the new lap record set by fellow Wilson Brothers Racing driver Jack Elsegood during Friday’s opening race.

Elsegood, driving the Coopers Pale Ale BF Falcon Ute, started from position number five, but jumped a spot as Kim Jane speared off at the first corner.

However, a mid race charge by Jane and Ryal Harris saw Elsegood finish the final race of the season in sixth.

For Wilson Brothers Racing team principal Cameron Wilson, another victory capped a red letter season for the team.

“Winning at Sandown and here at Oran Park a week later shows exactly how we have come along this season, and really sets us up well for next year,” said Wilson.

“Kurt drove brilliantly throughout the weekend, in some very high pressure races against some very experienced competitors.

“Since he has been with Wilson Brothers Racing he has won three of the six races contested, and finished on the round podium at both meetings.

“After the television coverage he has received, I think you will find that the question marks on his car will be replaced by sponsor logos for next year; Kurt will definitely be a championship contender.

“Jack once again had a solid race meeting, and no doubt if it wasn’t for the problems at the start of the season, he would have once again been challenging for the title.

“We can now look forward to the Bathurst 12 Hour early next year, where we will have a fleet of team cars at the pointy end of the field.”

Season 2009 is promising to be a cracker for the V8 Ute Championship, with racing returning to the Clipsal 500, as well as new events on the streets of Townsville and Homebush.
